Call for proposals for AAMC GDI and GFA Joint Professional Development Conference
The AAMC is accepting proposals for breakout sessions and posters for the Group on Diversity and Inclusion (GDI) and the Group on Faculty Affairs (GFA) Joint Professional Development Conference taking place June 12-14, 2023 in Indian Wells, Calif. The conference will offer leaders and emerging voices in faculty affairs, faculty development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion a forum to strengthen their network and share success stories. Attendees will also have an opportunity to explore new strategies to address topics including developing the next generation of leaders, transforming the culture of academic medicine, systemic inequities, and advancing community engagement. Interactive panel presentations, small-group discussion formats, and submissions that incorporate collaboration are highly encouraged. The deadline for proposals is Nov. 29 at 11:59 p.m. PT, and acceptance notifications will be sent in January 2023.

New AAMC report assesses diversity, equity, and inclusion in medical schools
For decades, members of the academic medicine community have sought sustained action and accountability from medical school leaders to accelerate meaningful change that supports diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). In 2021, the AAMC Council of Deans (COD) explored concrete actions that leaders can take to advance DEI at their institutions and established the COD Collective Action Initiative on Advancing DEI. This initiative provided an opportunity to help medical schools improve their climate and culture through the collective administration of the AAMC’s Diversity, Inclusion, Culture, and Equity (DICE) Inventory. A new report, The Power of Collective Action: Assessing and Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Efforts at AAMC Medical Schools, details the results of the 101 AAMC-member medical schools that completed the DICE Inventory (use the “add to cart” or “quick download” feature when downloading this free report).

AAMC fact card outlines debt, costs, and loan repayment for medical student education
The “Medical Student Education: Debt, Costs, and Loan Repayment Fact Card for the Class of 2022” is now available. The fact card includes data on various medical student debt topics, medical school costs, and summarizes loan repayment options for graduates. Among 2022 graduates with debt, the median education debt was $200,000 (education debt includes premedical and medical). For the medical school class of 2022, the median four-year cost of attendance was $268,476 at public schools and $363,836 at private schools.

Seeking working group members to develop foundational competencies for undergraduate medical education
The AAMC, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM), and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) are forming a working group to draft new foundational competencies for U.S. graduate medical education. The program sponsors are committed to building a diverse working group and will incorporate input from the medical education community. The working group will include approximately 15 volunteer and appointed members who will work over the calendar year 2023.  Applications will be accepted through Dec. 5.

The International Competency-based Medical Education (ICBME) Collaborators will host a webinar on Nov. 28 at 11 a.m. ET titled, Data Driven Determination of Competence: Is it possible? The panelists include Jesse Burk-Rafel, MD MRes, NYU Grossman School of Medicine (@jbrafel); Brigitte Smith, MD MHPE FSVS FACS, University of Utah (@Brig13Smith1); and Brent Thoma, MD MA MSc FRCPC DRCPSC, University of Saskatchewan (@Brent_Thoma). The ICBME Collaborators are a group of leading international experts who examine conceptual issues and current debates in competency-based medical education (CBME).

Nominations open for 2023 Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare
The Vilcek Foundation and The Arnold P. Gold Foundation are now accepting nominations for the 2023 Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare which recognizes immigrant professionals in medicine, healthcare, and public health whose career achievements demonstrate a commitment to the values of humanism. The Gold Foundation defines humanism in health care as “compassionate, collaborative, and scientifically excellent care that places the interests, values, and dignity of all people at the core of teaching and practice.” Vilcek-Gold Award recipients receive an unrestricted cash award of $10,000 and the 2023 award will be presented at Learn Serve Lead 2023: The AAMC Annual Meeting next November. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 31, 2023 at 5 p.m. ET.
