The AAMC is accepting proposals for breakout sessions and posters for the Group on Diversity and Inclusion (GDI) and the Group on Faculty Affairs (GFA) Joint Professional Development Conference taking place June 12-14, 2023 in Indian Wells, Calif. The conference will offer leaders and emerging voices in faculty affairs, faculty development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion a forum to strengthen their network and share success stories. Attendees will also have an opportunity to explore new strategies to address topics including developing the next generation of leaders, transforming the culture of academic medicine, systemic inequities, and advancing community engagement. Reminder: Complete the AAMC Survey on Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure Policies
All faculty affairs deans (or their designee) at U.S. medical schools should have received an invitation to complete the AAMC’s survey on faculty appointment, promotion, and tenure policies. We’ve already heard from almost half of all medical schools – our thanks if you’ve already completed the survey.

We hope all schools can complete the survey by October 31, 2022. The information you provide on your medical school’s policies will help the entire community understand the changing landscape of faculty employment policies.

Contact William T. Mallon, Ed.D., AAMC senior director of strategy and innovation development, if you haven’t received an invitation or if you have any questions. Thanks for your participation!

Increasing the number of Black men in medicine
The number of Black men in medicine has remained virtually stagnant since 1978, and that continues to have significant implications for patient care and advancing health equity. The AAMC hosted a session during the recent Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Annual Legislative Conference that explored the issues at the root of this crisis and proposed policy and systems-based solutions from introducing and revising policies to building a stronger academic infrastructure and changing the narrative. Speakers included current students, residents, and leaders from academic medicine, as well as community partners. Additionally, an opinion piece published in The Hill by AAMC Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer David A. Acosta, MD, and National Medical Association President Garfield Clunie, MD, discusses the distressingly low number of Black men in medicine and how academic medicine can address it with policy and systemic solutions.
