Call for proposals for AAMC GDI and GFA Joint Professional Development Conference
The Joint Planning Committee are accepting proposals for breakout sessions and posters for the GDI and GFA Joint Professional Development Conference scheduled for June 12-14, 2023 in Indian Wells, CA. This joint professional development conference offers leaders and emerging voices in faculty affairs, faculty development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion a forum to strengthen their network, share success stories, and explore new strategies to address topics including developing the next generation of leaders, transforming the culture of academic medicine, systemic inequities, and advancing community engagement. Interactive panel presentations, small-group discussion formats, and submissions that incorporate collaboration are highly encouraged. The deadline for proposals is November 29 by 11:59 p.m. PT, and acceptance notifications will be sent in January 2023.

New AAMC report on leadership compensation equity
Exploring Salary Equity Among Medical School Leadership is the third in the AAMC’s ongoing salary equity report series and provides new data about the compensation of senior-most leaders in academic medicine. The report is part of the AAMC’s continued commitment to examining salary equity at medical schools in the United States and presents the first publicly available analysis of U.S. medical school deans and dean’s office leadership compensation, the gender and racial/ethnic identities of those in leadership roles, and their administrative titles. Included in this publication are a number of reflection questions and action steps medical school leadership can consider when evaluating the diversity of their leadership teams and equity of their leadership compensation practices. To accompany the report, the AAMC has also published a series of new data tables with additional information on dean’s office staff and deans’ compensation. The AAMC will host a free webinar on Dec. 7 at 12:30pm ET to further explore the report. Please use the “Quick Download” feature in the AAMC Store when downloading this free report.

 Jonathan Jaffery, MD, MS, MMM, FACP, named AAMC chief health care officer
The AAMC has named Jonathan Jaffery, MD, MS, MMM, FACP, as its next chief health care officer. Jaffery is currently chief population health officer at UW Health, the integrated health system of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW), and is president of the UW Health Accountable Care Organization. He also serves on the faculty of the Division of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. He will join the AAMC on Dec. 31.

AAMC Center for Health Justice examines paid leave and its impact on maternal mental health
Amid a maternal mortality and mental health crisis, the United States is still the only high-income country without a national paid leave program for people who give birth. In an analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the AAMC Center for Health Justice found that women with lower household incomes and those from minoritized racial and ethnic groups are less likely to take paid leave and more likely to develop postpartum depression than their more privileged counterparts. A national paid leave program would likely narrow unjust and avoidable racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic inequities in maternal morbidity while benefiting all birthing people.

Defending the use of race-conscious admissions
The day after the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on the use of race-conscious admissions in higher education, Lee Jones, MD, dean for medical education at Georgetown University School of Medicine and chair-elect of the AAMC Board of Directors, argued for the importance of the practice in medical school admissions in an op-ed in STAT News. “The consideration of race as one of many elements in the admissions process is not only appropriate but essential. U.S. medical schools — and health care generally — thrive on the diversity of thought, experience, and perspective made possible by this holistic approach to admissions.”

CDC releases guidelines for prescribing opioids for pain
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released the 2022 CDC Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Pain (2022 Clinical Practice Guideline). The publication updates and replaces the 2016 CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain. Additionally, the CDC has released a suite of tools and resources to help patients and clinicians understand and use the recommendations in the new guideline in their pain care decision making.

Submissions for Interprofessional Education Collaborative Awards now open
The 2023 Excellence in Interprofessional Education Collaboration (IPEC) Award​ cycle is now open. Supported by IPEC and the U.S. Public Health Service PHS Commissioned Officers Foundation for the Advancement of Public Health, the award recognizes outstanding contributions who have innovatively addressed a public health issue on their campus or community. Interprofessional health professions students and/or faculty are invited to submit their work for consideration. The deadline for applications is Feb. 3, 2023
