On Doctoring

MDED116
The On Doctoring Year I course is a multi-dimensional course designed to introduce Year I students to the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that are fundamental to clinical medicine. On Doctoring is the first exposure to clinical medicine through a focus on physical examination (medical knowledge, personal inquiry and improvement of personal practice), patient interviewing (communication skills), and practical experience in the clinical community (patient care, professional identity, and science of health care systems). The course has multiple components: large and small group sessions, interviewing and physical exam and diagnosis with standardized patients, and work in a preceptor's office and medical community. Incorporated into the On Doctoring Course is Psychology of Illness, Patients, and Providers" is the portion of On Doctoring Year 1 in which students are encouraged and guided to explore more deeply some of the major themes of On Doctoring: namely, what it's like to be a patient, the family/supporter of an ill person, a member of a well-functioning multidisciplinary caring team, or a physician in training or in practice. These discussions are designed to foster empathy, compassion, and skills for participants to become more perceptive, effective, and resilient throughout their careers.

The portion is conducted mainly in two-hour blocks: one hour large group panel presentation and facilitated discussion, followed by one hour of small group discussion and skill-building sessions led by mental health professionals.
