What is CEPH?
The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) is an independent agency to accredit schools and programs in public health. CEPH accredits the Master of Public Health (MPH) at the Geisel School of Medicine.
CEPH’s mission assures quality in public health education and training to advance the science and practice of public health. The Council's focus is the improvement of health through the assurance of professional personnel who are able to identify, prevent and solve community health problems. The Council's objectives are:
- to promote quality in public health education through a continuing process of self-evaluation by the schools and programs that seek accreditation;
- to assure the public that institutions offering instruction in public health have been evaluated and judged to meet standards essential for the conduct of such educational programs; and
- to encourage - through periodic review, consultation, research, publications, and other means - improvements in the quality of education for public health.
Why is CEPH accreditation important?
- Accreditation confirms that a program meets rigorous academic and professional standards, ensuring students receive a high-quality education.
- Many employers, including the U.S. Public Health Service and other federal agencies, require or prefer candidates who have graduated from CEPH-accredited programs.
- Graduates of CEPH-accredited MPH programs are eligible to sit for the Certified in Public Health (CPH) exam without needing additional work experience.
- Students in CEPH-accredited programs may qualify for fellowships and other opportunities through organizations like the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH).
- Accreditation assures the public that graduates are well-prepared to address complex public health challenges and improve community well-being.
