Interventional Radiology Interest Group

Faculty Leader:  Eric Hoffer MD

The Interventional Radiology Interest Group is a medical student-led group that seeks to increase interest in the growing field of Interventional Radiology and provide opportunities for students to learn core IR curricular material. In addition to coordinating Radiology events with the Diagnostic Radiology group, this group aims to engage students through interactive-didactic lectures, hands-on workshops, research, and networking panels.

Tentative events:

1) *Introduction to Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology- during this session faculty from the diagnostic and interventional radiology sections will give a brief overview of radiology as a career. The majority of the session will be dedicated to a Q&A where students will have the opportunity to ask questions about the field of radiology.

2) *Radiology Residency- This session will offer an overview of what radiology residency programs are looking for in applicants. Current residents from the diagnostic and interventional radiology programs will be available to answer questions about life in residency.

3) Breast Cancer Awareness (DRIG) - in conjunction with the OB/GYN interest group the diagnostic radiology interest group will host a breast cancer awareness event where breast exams and breast cancer screening will be discussed.

4) Neuroradiology- This session will be planned to coincide with the second-year neuroloscience course and will give an introduction to the fields of diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology.

6) Cardiology/Respiratory Medicine (IRIG)- This winter session is scheduled to complement the material covered in the preclinical curriculum and will cover cases involving cardiovascular and respiratory pathology.

7) Gastrointestinal Radiology - This session will address the subspecialty of advanced abdominal imaging, show typical cases, review GI tract anatomy, and include a tour of the CT and Fluoroscopy suites with a mock UGI exam experience.

7) *Ultrasound Skills Night- This session gives students the opportunity to use ultrasound equipment in a number of simulated clinical scenarios.

8) IR Skills Night (IRIG)- This session will give students the opportunity to work with instruments commonly used in interventional radiology, including different-sized catheters, dilation balloons, coils, and stents.
