Degrees will be conferred on Class Day, 5/11, and diplomas will be available for pick up after the Class Day ceremony. Diplomas will be mailed the week of 5/13 to students who do not attend Class Day.

John Paul Sánchez, MD, MPH, serves as the Dean of Universidad Central Del Caribe (UCC) School of Medicine, Bayamón, Puerto Rico, the oldest private school on the island.

Dr. Sánchez is a nationally respected academic physician and leader with distinguished contributions in education; research; clinical care; diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); and community engagement.  He formerly served as the Acting Vice President, Office for DEI of the Health & Health Sciences of the University of New Mexico and supported DEI throughout the system with a focus on capacity building and developing sustainable programs.  Notably he galvanized efforts to launch the first formal medical Spanish program at the medical school, was Co-PI of a new HRSA funded New Mexico Center of Excellence, and co-created a Health & Health Sciences-wide Inclusive Excellence Council.

He has dedicated 25 years to diversifying the clinical and academic medicine workforces and to ensuring educational equity for all learners.  He has received funding from a variety of sources to support his educational and health equity work including from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the National Board of Medical Examiners, CDC, HRSA, and NIH.  He has published over 75 journal articles and book chapters and is Editor/Co-Editor of three books – "Succeeding in Academic Medicine: A Roadmap for Diverse Medical Students and Residents", "Health Professions and Academia: How to Begin Your Career", and "Latino, Hispanic, or of Spanish Origin+ Identified Student Leaders in Medicine, Recognizing More Than 50 years of Presence, Activism, and Leadership". He is an Associate Editor for MedEdPORTAL and launched the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Collection and co-launched the Language-Appropriate Health Care and Medical Language Education Collection, which has helped to advance DEI curricula content.  He formerly served on the Board of Academic Medicine.

As Executive Director of the Latino Medical Student Association, the oldest organization dedicated to educational equity for Latina/o/x/e, Hispanic or of Spanish Origin+ (LHS+) learners, he has focused on strengthening a national network of chapters at osteopathic and allopathic medical schools across the country.  He is a former Board Member of NHMA and HSHPS.  Most recently he launched a national study to assess discrimination faced by LHS+ identified learners when applying for visiting clerkships and residency programs.  He serves as President of Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to advancing diversity in academia through the concept of pre-faculty development.  Through LMSA and BNGAP he has developed connections with >90% of all medical schools in the U.S.

Dr. Sanchez is a native of the Bronx, of Puerto Rican heritage, and gay-identified. He attained his MPH from the Yale School of Public Health, his MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Jacobi/Montefiore Medical Centers, and is board-certified.  His mother was born in Moca and his father in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico.
