Valerie Anne Galton, PhD

Woman with blue sweater in a lab

Val Galton joined the faculty of Dartmouth Medical School in 1961 and has spent her research career studying the role of the thyroid hormone deiodinases in thyroid hormone action particularly during development, using both amphibian and rodent models. She taught endocrinology to first year medical students for fifty-five years and, in addition to being very involved in the Ph.D and MD/Ph.D. programs in the medical school, she has mentored many undergraduates, visiting international students and high school students in her laboratory.  When she officially retired in 2017, she still had an ongoing project and Dr Yeh generously offered her space in his laboratory, where she finished her bench work.  She is currently analyzing her results, writing papers and following the Yeh lab’s research into the impairments underlying the syndrome of fetal alcohol syndrome.
