Pre-Procedure Duties and Patient Care

Inpatient and outpatient procedures requiring sedation and recovery:

Day prior to procedure:
By the end of work hours on the day before the procedure, the staff who will be performing the procedure (or specifically designated surrogate, i.e., midlevel provider, resident, or fellow) will:

  • Ensure the workup has been completed and is in eDH, if not, write the pre-procedure note (refer to 'procedure approval guidelines' for instructions)
  • Communicate with nursing regarding any special orders or precautions for the procedure
  • Place order for IV, and any relevant conscious sedation medications

Day of procedure:
Upon patient arrival, the staff who will be performing the procedure (or specifically designated surrogate, i.e., midlevel provider, resident, or fellow) will:

  • Meet the patient and discuss interval medical history
  • Review the procedure and obtain written, informed consent
  • Perform pertinent physical exam
  • Review labs, confirm that medications were discontinued, if applicable
  • Mark the site for the procedure (when relevant)
  • Complete the 24 hour update to the pre-procedure note in eDH
  • Confirm the plan and expectations to both the nurse and technologist performing the procedure
  • Complete the pre-procedure checklist in eDH
