Rajan worked as a laboratory technician in the Adrian Halme Lab at the University of Virginia School of Medicine before joining the Molecular Cell Biology (MCB) program at Dartmouth College. Rajan is investigating the role of macrophages in pathogenesis of a rare autoimmune disease called systemic sclerosis. Rajan uses human derived cells and mouse to study the mechanism of aberrant regulation of macrophage in this disease. Rajan ultimately wants to therapeutically alter macrophages to ameliorate or eliminate the disease.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-24 alignleft\" style=\"clear: both\" src=\"https:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/pioli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2018\/10\/noelle_kosarek-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Noelle Kosarek\" width=\"177\" height=\"236\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Noelle Kos<\/b><b>arek<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Noelle Kosarek received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Lafayette College in 2016. Noelle went on to work as a laboratory technician in the Whitfield Lab at Dartmouth before starting as a PhD student in the Quantitative Biomedical Science program. Noelle's research interests include computational analysis of sequencing and microarray data at the intersection of systemic autoimmune diseases and women's health. Chris worked at University of California, San Francisco as a research associate at Werb Lab during his undergraduate years investigating tumor microenvironment in breast cancer while earning his degree. After graduation he worked as a staff research associate at Fong Lab at University of California, San Francisco working on various immunotherapy projects before moving on work at Unity Biotechnology. He joined MCB in Fall 2019. She joined the MCB program Fall, 2017. Before joining the Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) program at Dartmouth College in 2019, he worked as a research assistant at Asan Institute for Life Sciences at Asan Medical Center, South Korea. Heetaek\u2019s research interests range from immunology to bioinformatics. Heetaek is investigating the mechanisms by which macrophages are activated in SSc using a 3-D tissue skin model. The ultimate goal of his research is to identify patient-specific therapeutic targets and novel drugs for SSc patients.<\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix\"><\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Past Members<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-24 alignleft\" style=\"clear: both\" src=\"https:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/pioli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2019\/07\/Paul_lab_photo.jpg\" alt=\"Paul A. Spezza\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><b>Paul A. Spezza<\/b><br \/>\nPaul A. Spezza is majoring in biomedical engineering at Columbia University\u2019s School of Engineering and Applied Science. Through the MD-PhD Undergraduate Summer Fellowship at Geisel, Paul hopes to learn more about the career of a physician-scientist and further his research interests in immunology, BioMEMS, and microfluidics in order to model and treat disease. In his free time, Paul loves to play racquetball, be involved in global health activism, and explore his hometown of NYC.<\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix\"><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-24 alignleft\" style=\"clear: both\" src=\"https:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/pioli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2019\/07\/Vaish.jpg\" alt=\"Vaish Thiraviyarajah\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Vaish Thiraviyarajah<\/b><br \/>\nVaish Thiraviyarajah is an undergraduate at Dartmouth College. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry. She graduated from the Academy of Math, Engineering, and Science in June of 2018 at SLC, UT. Vaish\u2019s project in Dr. Pioli\u2019s lab focuses on the production of Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) from cell lines and isolated melanoma cells and the importance of LIF in the rate of tumor growth.
