This is in addition to the iPad that Geisel supplies.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Minimum <\/b><b>Laptop Recommendations<\/b>:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Operating System<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Mac<\/b><b>:\u00a0<\/b>macOS 15 (Sequoia) recommended; macOS 14 (Sonoma) minimum<\/li>\n<li><b>Windows<\/b>: 11 Professional. Windows 11 24H2 is considered our current update baseline.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Note<\/strong>: Avoid laptops running Windows 11 Home Edition as it will not function properly in the Dartmouth environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>RAM:<\/b>\u202f 16<span class=\"TextRun BCX2 SCXW101869421\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX2 SCXW101869421\">GB <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun BCX2 SCXW101869421\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX2 SCXW101869421\">minimum, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun BCX2 SCXW101869421\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX2 SCXW101869421\">more preferred depending on the operating system<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun BCX2 SCXW101869421\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX2 SCXW101869421\">.\u00a0 RAM is your computer\u2019s \u201cthinking memory\u201d.\u00a0 More memory will allow your computer to run faster or run more applications concurrently.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Internal Data Storage:<\/b>\u202f<span class=\"TextRun BCX2 SCXW138512513\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX2 SCXW138512513\">256GB or more, depending on your data storage needs. Over your time at Geisel, you will need roughly 100GB of space for course-related files.\u00a0 Students may be able to get by with less local disk storage by utilizing storage option \u2018in the cloud\u2019 (Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun BCX2 SCXW138512513\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX2 SCXW138512513\">etc<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun BCX2 SCXW138512513\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX2 SCXW138512513\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun BCX2 SCXW138512513\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX2 SCXW138512513\">) and storing some files on their iPads.\u00a0 In addition to storing copies of files, internal storage is also used by your computer to \u2018swap\u2019 data in and out of thinking memory (RAM).\u00a0 Insufficient free space for the computer to use for swapping will adversely impact performance.\u00a0 Internal storage should be managed so that at least 10% of the drive\u2019s available space is kept free.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Screen Size:<\/b> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW152878824 BCX2\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW152878824 BCX2\">Portable, space-conscious laptops are preferred for classroom use (15\u201d screen or smaller with 13\u201d screens being popular).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW152878824 BCX2\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW152878824 BCX2\">\u00a0 Students may wish to consider a larger, external display that can be connected for study back in their home.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Questions about your computer<\/b>: If you are unsure whether your existing computer will be appropriate, please contact Geisel\u2019s Computing Support team by calling 603.646.5123 or\u202fsending an email to <a href=\"mailto:geisel.computing.support@dartmouth.edu\">geisel.computing.support@dartmouth.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Need a New Computer?<\/h2>\n<p>For students wishing to purchase a new computer, the <a href=\"https:\/\/computerstore.dartmouth.edu\/\">Dartmouth Computer Store<\/a> offers educational pricing on laptop models from Dell, Apple, and other vendors.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/admin\/fin_aid\/\">Financial Aid office<\/a> is aware that purchasing a computer might be yet another \"miscellaneous cost\" of attending medical school, and they will handle each student on a case-by-case basis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All students are responsible for providing their own reliable Mac or Windows laptop.
