Assuming success in this initial phase, an additional $1.6 million will be added to extend the impact of this project to include nearly twice as many participating centers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/synergy.dartmouth.edu\/\">SYNERGY<\/a>, Dartmouth\u2019s clinical and translational science research institute, was funded with a five-year, $18 million Clinical and Translational Sciences Awards (CTSA) grant in fiscal year 2013 through the NIH\u2019s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences. The CTSA program supports a national network of medical research institutions collaborating on transforming the way clinical and translational science is conducted nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new grant will support better coordination, efficiency, and oversight of research involving multicenter studies,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/faculty\/facultydb\/view.php?uid=871\">Alan Green<\/a>, principal investigator of the grant, director of Dartmouth SYNERGY, and chair of the Department of Psychiatry. \u201cThis innovative approach will ensure that the latest research developments can quickly inform treatment and improve the health of patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the new grant, SYNERGY will work with eight other CTSA-supported hubs, based at Virginia Commonwealth University; Harvard Medical School; Case Western Reserve University; Vanderbilt University; the University of Texas, Southwestern; the University of New Mexico; the University of California, Davis; and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.<\/p>\n<p>Translation is the process of turning laboratory and clinical discoveries into interventions that improve the health of individuals and the public. However, clinical trials of new treatments, which often take place at many academic centers simultaneously, may be delayed because of inefficiencies and redundancies in the ethical and regulatory processes governed by separate Institutional Review Boards (IRB).
