{"id":3675,"date":"2014-08-26T14:13:32","date_gmt":"2014-08-26T18:13:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/news\/?p=3675"},"modified":"2015-10-12T14:25:58","modified_gmt":"2015-10-12T18:25:58","slug":"36-7-million-in-giving-sets-new-12-month-record-for-the-geisel-school-of-medicine-and-dartmouth-hitchcock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/news\/2014\/36-7-million-in-giving-sets-new-12-month-record-for-the-geisel-school-of-medicine-and-dartmouth-hitchcock\/","title":{"rendered":"$36.7 Million in Giving Sets New 12-Month Record for the Geisel School of Medicine and Dartmouth-Hitchcock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Strong support from donors pushed the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dartmouth-hitchcock.org\" target=\"_blank\">Dartmouth-Hitchcock<\/a> to new levels of philanthropic support for the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>More than 35,000 individuals, foundations, and organizations combined to set a new record in charitable giving for the academic medical center, with contributions totaling $36.7 million. This total \u2013 which includes gifts received but not pledges of future support \u2013 surpassed the year\u2019s fundraising goal by 33.5% and exceeded the previous year\u2019s giving by $11.2 million. The Geisel School of Medicine received $21.6 million (59%) of the total raised; Dartmouth-Hitchcock received $15.1 million (41%).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn academic health care, philanthropic support is more critical than ever to our success,\u201d says Skip Leonard, Vice President for Development for Dartmouth-Hitchcock and the Geisel School of Medicine. \u201cOur donors are making a real impact \u2013 on research, patient care, community health, and medical education. Whether from grateful patients and families, medical school alumni, community members, or our own employees, these are gifts from the heart. We\u2019re grateful for every gift and the impulse behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charitable giving highlights for the year included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Funding was completed for four new endowed professorships at Geisel, including two distinguished chairs.<\/li>\n<li>A gift commitment of $10 million from an anonymous donor is the largest single gift in Dartmouth-Hitchcock\u2019s history and will help launch <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dartmouth-hitchcock.org\/stories\/article\/20135\" target=\"_blank\">the new Center for Palliative and Hospice Care at Dartmouth-Hitchcock<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Led by a <a href=\"http:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/news\/2014\/dartmouths-geisel-school-of-medicine-receives-6-25-million-gift-for-neurological-research\/\" target=\"_blank\">$6.2 million bequest form the Estate of Susan Diamond<\/a>, gifts of more than $9 million were directed to research and teaching in neurosciences at Geisel.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/tdi.dartmouth.edu\" target=\"_blank\">The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice<\/a> received $3.2 million in gifts.<\/li>\n<li>Gifts to support student scholarships at the Geisel School\u2014primarily from medical school alumni\u2014totaled $1.37 million.<\/li>\n<li>A combination of broad-based support and major gifts from individuals were key to the year\u2019s fundraising success. Forty-eight donors made gifts of $100,000 or more. More than 1,500 employees of Dartmouth-Hitchcock and the Geisel School also contributed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to Leonard, \u201cDartmouth-Hitchcock and Geisel are leading and innovating in so many ways, and our donors have an opportunity to be part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth<\/strong>, founded in 1797, strives to improve the lives of the communities it serves through excellence in learning, discovery, and healing.
