{"id":3419,"date":"2014-07-25T09:48:57","date_gmt":"2014-07-25T13:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/news\/?p=3419"},"modified":"2014-08-12T15:43:16","modified_gmt":"2014-08-12T19:43:16","slug":"understanding-tb-diagnosis-in-haiti","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/news\/2014\/understanding-tb-diagnosis-in-haiti\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding TB Diagnosis in Haiti"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Tara Kedia<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last week, I arrived in Les Cayes, Haiti, where I will be working for the next month at H\u00f4pital Immacul\u00e9e Conception (HIC), the public hospital for Les Cayes and surrounding regions. Les Cayes is the capital of the South department of Haiti, with a population of over 125,000 in 2009. The official languages of Haiti are French (spoken in more formal settings) and Haitian Creole (the lingua franca). I do speak French, which has been a big help, but I\u2019m still struggling to understand Haitian Creole so I can communicate with everyone here.<\/p>\n<p>I first learned about Dartmouth\u2019s affiliation with HIC while seeking an opportunity to assist in global health work during the summer between my first and second years of medical school. I was connected with Dr. Peter Wright and Dr. Elizabeth Talbot, who are serving as advisors to my work at HIC.
