The department expanded its NIH-funded research portfolio to $19.3 million, representing a $2.5 million increase compared with the 2024 BRIMR report. This growth underscores the department’s continued strength in securing competitive federal research support and advancing discovery in microbiology and immunology.

“In this tough funding environment, it’s especially gratifying to see some significant growth through faculty recruitments and some team science proposals coming to fruition,” said David Leib, PhD, chair of Microbiology and Immunology. “It’s also due to the creativity, teamwork, and dogged persistence of the M&I faculty and scientists in their labs—it’s very exciting to break into the top ten nationwide.”

The department’s top 10 national ranking contributed to broader gains for Geisel in the 2025 BRIMR report. Overall, the medical school garnered over $80 million in NIH grant funding in 2025, marking a $22 million year-over-year gain in extramural research support and raising its overall ranking six spots in the overall ranking. Geisel is the smallest medical school by enrollment in the top 70.

“At a time of real challenges for biomedical research funding, the BRIMR rankings underscore the resilience and momentum of Geisel’s research enterprise. They are a testament to the excellence of our investigators and to a research culture that continues to advance discovery across disciplines,” said Steve Leach, MD, interim dean of the Geisel School of Medicine.

Geisel’s clinical partner, Dartmouth Health, also demonstrated notable momentum in the 2025 BRIMR rankings. Dartmouth Health climbed to 25th among freestanding hospitals and surpassed $20 million in NIH funding, representing a doubling of NIH support since 2022.

“Researchers at Dartmouth Health have been extraordinarily productive in this difficult funding environment,” said Steve Bernstein, chief research officer at Dartmouth Health and senior associate dean of clinical and translational research at Geisel. “Our investigators are bringing in more grants, including large and more complex grants, like center grants and institutional training grants.
