Nicole J. Borges, PhD, the Edward Tulloh Krumm Professor of Medical Education, and chair of the Department of Medical Education at Dartmouth\u2019s Geisel School of Medicine, has been named Chair-Elect of the Association of American Medical College\u2019s Medical Education Scholarship, Research, and Evaluation (MESRE) Section effective immediately. She was selected for her outstanding scholarly contributions to the field of medical education.<\/p>\n

A health psychologist, Borges\u2019 research interests include personality and medical specialty choice, physician career development, noncognitive factors contributing to student success, team-based learning, medical education, and health topics related to medical education. She reviews for numerous journals and is the author\/co-author of over 90 peer-reviewed journal articles covering medical education, medical specialty choice, and career development.<\/p>\n

\"I am very pleased that Dr. Borges has been selected for this national leadership position. This appointment recognizes her many scholarly contributions to the field of medical education,\" says Duane A. Compton, dean.<\/p>\n

Borges who has long been actively involved in MESRE, an affinity group of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), has held several leadership roles within the AAMC Group on Educational Affairs (GEA) over the course of her 25-year career in medical education.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am incredibly honored to serve as the next chair of MESRE. I appreciate the opportunity to serve at the national level and to continue the legacy of MESRE\u2019s mission to improve the quality of medical education research,\u201d she says. \u201cFostering and shaping the future of medical education research, scholarship, and evaluation is exciting and I consider this a natural extension of my work here at the medical school. I am very proud to have Geisel\u2019s support\u2014especially that of the Dean\u2019s office and department faculty.<\/p>\n

\u201cMedical education research, scholarship, and evaluation is an area of focus for our department and the medical school community\u2014this is something I am passionate about and committed to. Working alongside colleagues in various stages and phases of their careers to develop, grow, and achieve success in medical education research and scholarship is something I find very rewarding. As we work to build the future of medical education research and scholarship, I look forward to engaging nationally with medical educators and the AAMC to further MESRE\u2019s mission.\u201d<\/p>\n

MESRE serves as a national resource for educators across the medical education continuum by supporting the development, dissemination, and application of high-quality scholarship, research, and evaluation to enhance the quality of research in medical education and to promote its application to educational practice. Each region of the GEA has a MESRE chair who serves on the AAMC\u2019s national MESRE Section Steering Committee. Borges served as MESRE chair for the AAMC Southern Group on Educational Affairs (SGEA) from 2015-2017 and SGEA chair from 2018-2019. She was also a steering committee member of the AAMC Medical Education Research Certificate Program from 2017-2020.<\/p>\n

Borges will serve as the national chair for a four-year term, including one year as Chair-Elect.<\/p>\n
