Two Geisel medical students were recognized during the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) annual meeting for their demonstrated leadership and commitment to diversity. Chad Lewis \u201920 has received a prestigious Herbert W. Nickens Scholarship award, and Alex Lindqwister \u201921, was elected national chair of the AAMC Organization of Student Representatives (OSR). Lindqwister is currently a Northeast regional delegate.<\/p>\n

\"I feel very honored and inspired by being selected for this award. Dr. Nickens has left behind an impressive legacy and huge shoes for us to fill,\u201d Lewis says. \u201cIncreasing the number of underrepresented minorities entering medicine through mentorship and advocacy has always been a priority of mine, and it\u2019s something that I intend to keep working toward throughout my career. If it wasn't for the many outstanding people helping me along each step of my journey, I would have never made it this far. Upholding that tradition is the least I can do.\"<\/p>\n

The competitive scholarship is awarded nationally to five outstanding third-year medical students who have shown leadership in eliminating inequities in medical education and healthcare and in addressing educational, societal, and healthcare needs of racial and ethnic minorities in the U.S.<\/p>\n

\u201cChad is an exemplary student who is passionate about social justice, health equity, and medical education, and has a longstanding history of pursuing professional and personal opportunities to impact meaningful change,\u201d says Roshini Pinto-Powell, MD, associate dean of students at Geisel. \u201cHe continues to make brilliant contributions and holds several leadership roles at the medical school that directly involve social justice, medical education, and health care equity. In each endeavor, Chad demonstrates a collaborative nature and innate leadership abilities. He is an authentic and engaging medical student who enjoys inspiring and equipping disadvantaged and low-income students to become health care professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lewis is a founding member of Black Students at Geisel, a group dedicated to enriching diversity at the medical school by providing mentoring and networking opportunities to minority students while hosting public cultural events to involve the broader community. He is also a co-founder of the Health Equity Task Force, and as a member of student government sits on the medical school\u2019s Diversity Council.<\/p>\n

OSR, the student branch of the AAMC focused on academic medicine and medical education, represents undergraduate medical students in the U.S. to physicians, educators, and university faculty. Elected by fellow OSR representatives, Lindqwister begins his three-year commitment as chair-elect prior to transitioning to chair in November 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing elected to represent medical students at a national level is both humbling and exciting,\u201d Lindqwister says. \u201cI am honored to have this opportunity and will use this\u00a0privilege\u00a0to advocate for all students.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Geisel Medical Education Scholar, Lindqwister has a deep-rooted interest in equity in medical education and medical futurism\u2014he believes medicine should be taught to reflect not only an increasingly diverse student body, but a diverse patient population. And he is adamant about advising medical students on how rapid advancements in technology will radically change the practice of medical practice. \u201cI plan to use my platform as incoming chair to push both of these issues to the forefront of discussion in medical education,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am delighted that Alex Lindqwister will be national chair of the OSR at the AAMC. Alex is a co-leader of qMD and has been a collaborative partner in helping our community address health disparities in multiple content areas by leading skills night sessions and creating enrichment electives,\u201d Pinto-Powell says. \u201cHe is also a co-leader of the Med Ed Scholars program and the current Northeast regional medical education delegate\u2014in those roles he has been involved in curricular reform, new pedagogical approaches, and medical education trends. These interests and skills will make him an effective national OSR chair and by extension a conduit of ideas to and from Geisel.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
