Geisel\u2019s research collaboration with MUHAS began in 2001 with the initiation of the DarDar TB vaccine trial.<\/p>\n<p>IDI, an integral part of the MUHAS\u2019s College of Medicine and School of Public Health, will offer critically needed training, continuing professional development, and consultancy in infectious diseases, research, and outreach services. Its goal is to create a pool of healthcare professionals and researchers competent in conducting research, training, mentoring, and quality management of infectious and tropical diseases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis training grant is perfectly aligned with Geisel\u2019s vision for global health partnerships,\u201dsays principal investigator Lisa V. Adams MED \u201990, an associate professor of medicine and of community and family medicine, associate dean for global health, and director of the Center for Health Equity at Geisel. \u201cThis program will allow us to support the training of MUHAS\u2019s most talented faculty to fully launch the Infectious Disease Institute as the premiere self-sustaining research and training institute for HIV and TB in East Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HIV and HIV-associated TB remain dominant health issues in Tanzania despite recent progress in HIV control and prevention. With an estimated 54,000 new infections each year\u20146,500 occurring in children under the age of 15\u2014TB is the principal cause of death from HIV.
