Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine has received the 2023 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.
As a recipient of the annual Health Professions HEED Award—a national honor recognizing U.S. health colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion—Geisel will be featured, along with 64 other recipients, in the November/December 2023 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. Geisel is one of only 15 medical schools and one of only two Ivy League institutions to receive this honor.
“I'm delighted to learn that we are being recognized by Insight into Diversity for our ongoing commitment to building a more inclusive and belonging community,” says Geisel Dean Duane Compton, PhD. “I'm exceptionally proud of our Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging and her staff in the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement for everything they do to support our students, and our entire community for embracing the importance of diversity in our research and education programs.”
The Geisel School of Medicine was recognized for its robust Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion infrastructure across campus, numerous efforts designed to provide education and training opportunities for the next generation of doctors, basic science researchers and health scientists, and rural initiatives that improve access to care for all New Hampshirites.
“Receiving this award is a humbling experience that affirms Geisel School of Medicine’s commitment to inclusive excellence,” says Lisa McBride, PhD, Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging at Geisel. “This recognition truly speaks to the real understanding that each of us plays in making this school the best that it can be. I am so grateful to our students, faculty, and staff who are so dedicated to creating a school of true belonging, and we will continue to work each day to maintain our focus on diversity, educational equity, and social justice.”
The Health Professions HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees—and best practices for both—continued leadership support for diversity, and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion.
“We take a detailed approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a Health Professions HEED Award recipient,” says Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “Our standards are high, and we look for schools where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being done every day across their campus.”
