The AAAAI includes more than 7,000 allergists/immunologists—in the United States, Canada, and 72 other countries—and serves as a trusted resource for patients with allergies, asthma, and immune deficiency disorders. In addition to allergists and immunologists, its members include other medical specialists and allied health and related healthcare professionals who share a special interest in the research and treatment of allergic and immunologic diseases.

Elected by their peers, members of AAAI’s Board of Directors serve four-year terms, helping the organization fulfill its mission of advancing knowledge and practice of allergy, asthma, and immunology for optimal patient care. “I am incredibly grateful to my AAAAI friends and colleagues for the opportunity to serve our specialty in this position,” says Shaker, whose areas of focus will include education and advocacy.

Shaker’s work as a co-chair of the Joint Task Force on Practice Parameters (representing AAAAI and the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology) to develop parameters for diagnosis and management of allergic and immunologic diseases will complement his new role.

“It will provide some wonderful opportunities to work with other leaders in the field and to translate some of the important work we’ve done at Dartmouth, including efforts to improve healthcare delivery and develop shared decision making tools for patients,” he says.

Shaker is also an associate editor of Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology and an editorial board member of The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice and the Journal of Food Allergy. His research interests center around optimizing value-based care in allergy and clinical immunology. He has published over 150 articles and guidelines.

Shaker earned his BS from James Madison University, his MD from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and his MSc in the evaluative clinical sciences and healthcare leadership at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. He joined the Geisel faculty in 2004 and has worked to develop several multi-disciplinary clinics within Dartmouth Health Children’s, including the first and only food oral immunotherapy program in New Hampshire and Vermont.
