Geisel Alumnus W. Hardy Hendren, MD, to Give Lecture on the Father of Scientific Surgery

The Office of Alumni Relations at the Geisel School of Medicine will host W. Hardy Hendren, MD (D’47, Med’50), for a special lecture titled “Dr. John Hunter - The Father of Scientific Surgery.” The event will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. in Auditorium E at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Hendren will talk about the career of Dr. John Hunter (1728-1793) who, without a formal medical education, became one of the most distinguished scientists and surgeons of his day. Known as one of the founders of modern surgery, Hunter based his approach to medicine on observation and experimentation and believed medical treatments and surgical procedures should be tested and proven before being introduced into practice. Hunter was a renowned teacher and his revolutionary ideas were widely practiced by aspiring medical students in the first half of the 19th century.

Dr. Hendren is the Robert E. Gross Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Emeritus Chief of Surgery at the Boston Children's Hospital. The Geisel School of Medicine Alumni Council will also be recognizing Dr. Hendren for his pioneering work in pediatric surgery and pediatric urology on Oct. 17, 2014 at the first annual alumni achievement awards celebration.
