{"id":51,"date":"2025-01-13T21:49:56","date_gmt":"2025-01-13T21:49:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/geiselmed2.dartmouth.edu\/financial-aid\/?page_id=51"},"modified":"2026-03-23T18:52:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T18:52:17","slug":"federal-direct-loan-and-grad-plus-loan-borrowers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/financial-aid\/resources\/federal-direct-loan-and-grad-plus-loan-borrowers\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Loans"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Federal Loans<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Direct Unsubsidized Federal Loans are part of the Direct Lending program and are serviced by several agencies.\u00a0 Your loan(s) will be assigned to one of these agencies as shown in your loan disclosure statement.\u00a0 Federal Loans require a two step process be completed to allow a school to certify the loan and loan funds to be disbursed to a student account.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><b><\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/counseling-selection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Entrance Counseling Requirement<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Federal regulations governing Title IV programs, including the Federal Direct Loan program, require that all students receive what is called \"Entrance Counseling\" before a school may certify a loan for them. Entrance Counseling provides each student with information regarding their rights and responsibilities as a federal loan borrower and helps students understand what it means should they enter default and what alternatives there are once they enter repayment. You will complete your Entrance Counseling on the federal student aid website: <b><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/counseling-selection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/counseling-selectionwww.studentaid.gov<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/mpn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Master Promissory Note Requirement<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">The Master Promissory Note is a legal document that explains the terms and conditions of your loan and is your promise to repay your loans and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education.\u00a0 All borrowers will need to complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) online at <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/mpn\/\"><strong>https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/mpn\/<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have completed the required steps, our office will be notified automatically and the confirmation will be kept on file. All of these loans are serviced by ECSI Heartland servicing company.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>Promissory Note Requirement<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">The servicer will send a unique link, to those students eligible, via email that prompts the student to complete the required promissory note.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Private Loans<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Geisel students may use private lenders to finance their education.
