Federal Loans
Direct Unsubsidized Federal Loans and Graduate PLUS Loans are part of the Direct Lending program and are serviced by several agencies. Your loan(s) will be assigned to one of these agencies as shown in your loan disclosure statement. Federal Loans require a two step process be completed to allow a school to certify the loan and loan funds to be disbursed to a student account.
Entrance Counseling Requirement
Federal regulations governing Title IV programs, including the Federal Direct Loan program, require that all students receive what is called "Entrance Counseling" before a school may certify a loan for them. Entrance Counseling provides each student with information regarding their rights and responsibilities as a federal loan borrower and helps students understand what it means should they enter default and what alternatives there are once they enter repayment. You will complete your Entrance Counseling on the federal student aid website: https://studentaid.gov/counseling-selectionwww.studentaid.gov
Master Promissory Note Requirement
The Master Promissory Note is a legal document that explains the terms and conditions of your loan and is your promise to repay your loans and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education. All borrowers will need to complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) online at https://studentaid.gov/mpn/.
Once you have completed the required steps, our office will be notified automatically and the confirmation will be kept on file. If you have trouble with the online process, please contact us at geisel.financial.aid@dartmouth.edu.
