Professional Interests
Dr. O'Connor's primary interest is in the use of epidemiologic techniques to improve clinical and patient decision-making and to accelerate the improvement of clinical care.
He is the Principal Investigator of the National Quality Program of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This project uses the CFF database and works with CF teams across the US. This CFF sponsored project has resulted in substantial improvement in clinical outcomes. In 2005-06 Dr. O’Connor was chairman of the committee that developed and implemented national public reporting of CF clinical outcomes.
For over 20 years he was the Research Director of the Northern New England Cardiovascular Disease Study Group. The NNECDSG is a regional voluntary consortium of hospitals and practitioners in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. The group maintains a clinical database and works with care teams to improve the management of cardiovascular disease. The consortium was organized in 1987 and is ongoing.
He was Director of the Education Center at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice for 17 years and was Associate Dean at Dartmouth Medical School.
