Biography

Rand is currently Professor of Medical Education and Neurology at Geisel. His initial postgraduate training was as a chiropractor and acupuncturist at the National University of the Health Sciences in Lombard, Illinois. He subsequently did a PhD in neuroscience at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. After a postdoctoral fellowship in neurophysiology at Loyola and a several years doing neurophysiology research at the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology in Japan, he completed an M.D. degree from the University of Illinois. Following a medical internship at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY, he completed a neurology residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He remained on staff in the Department of Neurology at DHMC as well as joining the faculty in the Department of Anatomy. He assumed the chair of the Department of Anatomy in 2007 and transitioned to chair of the Department of Medical Education in 2016. He has been course faculty and course director for several undergraduate medical courses as well as serving as the faculty lead for the Institutional Self-Study for the LCME accreditation process and as chair of the admissions committee. In addition to his faculty activities he has served on several NIH study sections and editorial boards and on the Neurology & Neuroscience Task Force of the National Board of Medical Examiners. He has published more than 75 articles and book chapters in the fields of pain, alternative medical practice, anatomy and neurology.
