Professional Interests
Anna N. Miller, MD, FAAOS, FACS, FAOA, is Professor and Chair of Orthopaedics at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. Dr. Miller grew up in Texas and attended Rice University, graduating with honors in biology. She then went on to receive her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, followed by residency training at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. She then completed an Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Miller started her career at Wake Forest School of Medicine, where she was Assistant Director of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service in addition to receiving a Brooks Scholar in Medicine award in three consecutive years. She was also selected for their Career Development for Women Leaders program. Dr. Miller was subsequently recruited to Washington University in St. Louis, where she served as Division Chief of Orthopaedic Trauma, as well as the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs. She also held the Jerome J. Gilden, MD, Distinguished Professorship. Most recently, she moved to take the position of Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics for Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. Dr. Miller has particular interests in the improvement of orthopaedic trauma care on a national level and was the former Chair of the Orthopaedic Subgroup for the American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma. She now serves on the Board of Governors for the American College of Surgeons (ACS) while also acting as a liaison to the ACS for both the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA). She also has a strong interest in improving the management and outcomes of elderly patients with fragility fractures and has been involved in multiple national and international committees in this arena, including work with the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA), the AAOS, the AO North America, and the National Quality Forum. Dr. Miller has been involved in numerous multicenter national studies, including as a co-investigator on several federally funded grants, particularly focusing on automotive crash injury investigation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Crash Investigation Research and Engineering Network. Dr. Miller has a national reputation for her achievements and leadership activities, including being chosen as a 2015 AOA North American Traveling Fellow, a 2018 AAOS Leadership Fellow, and a 2021 AOA American-British-Canadian Traveling Fellow. Most recently, she was chosen as an Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Fellow in 2024-2025. Dr. Miller is also active in the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, including currently serving as Secretary on the Board of Directors. She is also the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of the OTA FractureBook, a new digital textbook for orthopaedic trauma surgeons worldwide. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her amazing husband, Greg, reading, and working on her backyard wildlife preserve.
