Biography:

Cornel N. Stanciu, M.D., M.R.O., F.A.S.A.M., is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine and Director of Addiction Services at New Hampshire Hospital.

Dr. Stanciu completed his general psychiatry training at East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine where he was actively involved in numerous academic research projects and community outreach programs geared at disseminating knowledge to local providers.

Dr. Stanciu subsequently completed the Addiction Psychiatry fellowship offered through Dartmouth. He is triple board certified having been certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology twice and additionally by the American Association of Medical Review Officers.

Throughout his career, Dr Stanciu played an active role in academia having published a multitude of highly-cited papers on themes related to addiction, particularly new psychoactive drugs and Kratom. He is on the editorial boards of three journals and has received multiple awards for excellence in research and clinical care. His research was presented at numerous conferences and cited in literature.

In 2017, Dr. Stanciu was named the Ruth Fox, ASAM, scholar and Governors Institute on Substance Abuse scholar. In 2018 he received the American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award.

Dr. Stanciu is actively involved with several organizations including the APA, ASAM, and AAAP and has contributed to their newsletters, currently serving as the early career editor for the latter. He was also appointed to serve on the New Hampshire Board of Medicine, Medical Review Subcommittee as well as on the New Hampshire Therapeutic Cannabis Medical Oversight Board.

Dr. Stanciu is also the author of Deciphering the Addicted Brain, a guide to help families and the general public better understand addictive disorders.
