Leyre Notario Barandiaran, MPH, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher in the Epidemiology Department at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine working with Margaret Karagas, recently shared findings from a new study examining whether following a planetary health–style diet during pregnancy influences preterm birth and infant size at birth. The results, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, draw on data from the New Hampshire Birth Cohort, a long-running study of maternal and child health.
The study found that greater adherence to the EAT-Lancet Planetary Health Diet—a plant-forward dietary pattern designed to support both human and environmental health—was associated with healthier birth outcomes, including longer gestational duration, healthier birth weights, and a lower risk of preterm birth.
