Dartmouth Graduate Students Earn Top Spots at National Big Data Case Competition

Competing for the first time, four teams from the QBS MS program, including a team of two graduate students and one undergraduate, created a diagnostic tool to solve the problem posed to 37 different teams.

[HANOVER, NH] – Four individual teams of Dartmouth students from the Quantitative Biomedical Sciences (QBS) program finished in second, third, fourth, and seventh place at the Fourth Annual National Big Data Health Science Student Case Competition, announced on Friday, February 10, 2023. The second and third-place teams from Dartmouth QBS were awarded $3,000 and $2,000 respectively. Thirty-seven teams from 15 universities, representing a range of education levels, from undergraduate students to PhD candidates, were tasked with creating a diagnostic tool using gene expression data, and explaining their analytical methods within 24 hours. Each team presented their solution to a panel of judges from the health and data science fields. The second, third, fourth, and seventh place finishes for the Dartmouth teams represent a strong performance for their first time competing at the Big Data Health Science Student Case Competition.

"We are very proud of the enthusiastic commitment of Dartmouth’s students to do well in the Big Data Health Science Student Case Competition. They taught themselves new skills in the 24 hours they had to understand their case and analyze the data. Their success gives them confidence that their skills are up to the challenges they may encounter in their careers after graduation,” says Susan Diesel, PhD, Program and Operations Director for QBS.

Hosted virtually by the University of South Carolina, the competition provided students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge to the analysis of big datasets in healthcare settings. Organizers of the competition praised the outstanding quality of students this year.
