Presented by Dr. Lawrence Cresswell, DO, JD<\/strong><\/p>\nDr. Lawrence Cresswell is a native of Rochester, New York, who moved to New Orleans at the age of 17 to attend Xavier University of Louisiana. \u00a0 \u00a0After graduating from Xavier with majors in biology and chemistry, he attended the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine in Long Island, NY where he earned his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine. \u00a0Dr. Cresswell completed his residency (including a year as Chief Resident) in Emergency Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY.<\/p>\n
After completing his residency in 2009, Dr. Cresswell returned to New Orleans, working at Ochsner Medical Center, New Orleans East Hospital, East Jefferson General Hospital and the New Orleans VA Medical Center. \u00a0 He has served as Medical Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine at both Ochsner Baptist Medical Center and New Orleans East Hospital. \u00a0From 2013-2017 Dr. Cresswell completed a law degree from Loyola University while working full time as an emergency physician. \u00a0Dr. Cresswell is looking forward to using his experience as a physician as well as his knowledge of the law in his work with the Investigations staff and the board.<\/p>\n

\nDiscussion on\u00a0Black Men in White Coats (BMWC)<\/em><\/h3>\nwith Dr. Dale Okorodudu<\/strong><\/p>\nBlack Men In White Coats is a movement to support young African American men and boys who dream to become Medical Doctors. BMWC was the vision of Dr. Dale Okorodudu, who launched the BMWC website six years ago after seeing a 2013 Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) report that the already under-represented percentage of black men in medical school was decreasing. In response, Dr. Okorodudu filmed the very first Black Men In White Coats video, which was released May 19th, 2013.\u00a0Dr. Okorordudu has graciously agreed to lead us in a discussion on this film.<\/p>\n

Dr. Joyce Sackey, D'85, MED '89<\/strong><\/p>\nJoyce Sackey, MD, is Dean of Global Health & Multicultural Affairs and Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, as well as a practicing internist at Tufts Medical Center. Dr. Sackey also spearheads Tufts\u2019 commitment to promoting diversity and equality in the health science professions by working to recruit and graduate people with backgrounds that are underrepresented in the field. She also manages the school\u2019s \u201cpipeline\u201d programs, which work with middle and high school students as well as college students to increase minority students' interest in and inspire young people to consider the fields of medicine, biomedical sciences, and health professions. Dr. Sackey will discuss her journey in medicine as a black woman and how these experiences have shaped who she is today. In line with our theme for this month, Dr. Sackey exemplifies black excellence and perseverance.<\/p>\n

\nGuided Meditation, Mindful Movement, and Dialogue for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC)<\/h3>\n
with Abraham Dejene, MBA RYT-200<\/strong><\/p>\nThis seminar will offer a unique opportunity for the BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color) community to practice Mindfulness in a space that is intentionally cultivated for them. Through it, participants will learn the principles of practice, develop their own mindfulness practice, and apply principles to daily life. They will learn strategies to skillfully work with thoughts, emotions, and sensations. Through guided meditations and mindful movement, they will develop their capacity to enhance mind-body awareness of present-moment experience.
