{"id":405,"date":"2021-03-18T19:37:26","date_gmt":"2021-03-18T19:37:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/deansoffice\/?p=405"},"modified":"2021-03-18T19:37:26","modified_gmt":"2021-03-18T19:37:26","slug":"standing-together-with-asian-americans-pacific-islanders-and-women-in-our-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/deansoffice\/2021\/03\/18\/standing-together-with-asian-americans-pacific-islanders-and-women-in-our-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Standing Together with Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Women in Our Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span>Dear Colleagues:<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span>We want to echo<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span><a title=\"https:\/\/president.dartmouth.edu\/news\/2021\/03\/statement-condemning-violence-georgia\" href=\"https:\/\/president.dartmouth.edu\/news\/2021\/03\/statement-condemning-violence-georgia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">President Hanlon's statement condemning the violence in the Atlanta area<\/a><\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/president.dartmouth.edu\/news\/2021\/03\/statement-condemning-violence-georgia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">,<\/a>\u00a0which left eight people dead,\u00a0including seven women,<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>six of whom were of Asian descent.<\/span><span>\u00a0While this tragic event is still being investigated, we do know that throughout the pandemic, there has been a significant increase in violence and racism against Asians and the<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Asian American\/Pacific Islander (AAPI) community\u00a0<\/span><span>in the United States. We must also recognize that violence against women is a serious ongoing problem in this country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span>As a community we must stand together to condemn violence and hatred against women, Asians and the AAPI community. It is our strong belief\u00a0<\/span><span>that a diverse and inclusive community of students, residents, fellows, staff, and faculty enhances our mission, and that everyone in our community, regardless of background, should feel safe, welcomed, and respected.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0As members of the biomedical community, we are also committed to use our knowledge to inform others with facts and science to address the racist and sexist ideologies that can be the basis for such crimes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>We know that tragic news such as this may cause feelings of anger or anxiety for many. Please know that you are not alone.
