(Bill) Nugent. Bill died on Sunday, January 31, from complications of cancer.

Bill joined Dartmouth-Hitchcock in 1981, as the fourth member of the section of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He led the Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery from 1990-2012, and was the first Avery Professor of Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, retiring from D-H in 2014. He was a founder, in 1987, of the Northern New England Cardiovascular Disease Study Group (NNE) - a collaboration of cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and others involved in heart bypass operations throughout Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Among his many other professional assignments and commitments, he was a consultant to the Institute of Medicine’s President's Council on Quality Improvement in Healthcare, and served on the Cardiovascular Clinical Advisory Panel of The Joint Commission.

Bill was an Emeritus Professor of Surgery, of Community and Family Medicine, and of The Dartmouth Institute at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. In addition to his work at DHMC, he served patients at the VA Medical Center in White River Jct., VT.

He was a man of many accomplishments, but will be remembered for his commitment to patients and not accepting the status quo, and what one colleague referred to as “his undeniable optimism, his willingness to embrace change and his love of new people and new ideas.”

To those of you who would like to send a note to Bill’s family, the address is:

P.O.
