Dr. Hunt will join us on August 1, 2026.

Dr. Hunt is an experienced and highly respected academic medical leader. She comes to Geisel from the University of Florida College of Medicine, where she currently serves as interim dean and the Folke H. Peterson Dean’s Distinguished Professor. Before becoming dean, she served as chair of the UF College of Medicine’s Department of Pathology, Immunology, and Laboratory Medicine and chief of the hospital medical staff at UF Health Shands Hospital and clinics. As chief of staff, she oversaw more than 2,000 credentialed medical staff members and co-chaired the Medical Executive Committee.

An internationally known head and neck and molecular pathologist, Dr. Hunt has authored more than 160 peer-reviewed scientific publications in her subspecialty and has also published on medical staff affairs, professional practice evaluation, and quality improvement.

At the University of Florida, Dr. Hunt led a large and intricate academic medical enterprise featuring two medical school campuses and 10 affiliated research institutes and centers, including a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center and a Clinical and Translational Science Institute. As dean, she successfully led her college through financial and organizational complexities, optimizing opportunities to thrive.

Dr. Hunt has served on boards of directors and in leadership roles for various organizations, including the College of American Pathologists, the Association for Molecular Pathologists and the Association of Pathology Chairs.

She also brings a background that aligns with Dartmouth’s mission as a research university with the liberal arts at its core. A graduate of Bryn Mawr College and the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned both her MD and Master of Education, she has a genuine appreciation for the role of the liberal arts in shaping thoughtful, compassionate physician leaders.

With her appointment, Dr. Hunt will be the first woman to serve as dean in the 229-year history of Geisel, which first admitted women in 1960. I believe she will be an outstanding dean for Geisel and a strong partner for Dartmouth Health, and I am confident she will lead our institution into an era of even greater success.

I want to acknowledge our colleagues Charlie Barlowe and Barbara Jobst for leading this very successful search and to thank the entire search committee whose members devoted significant time, care, and judgment to this important work. I also extend my sincere thanks to Provost Santiago Schnell for his tremendous leadership and guidance throughout the search process.

On a personal note, it has been an honor to serve as interim dean during this period of transition. Geisel is an extraordinary community, and I am deeply grateful for your partnership, support, and shared commitment to our mission. I very much look forward to formally welcoming Dr. Hunt to Dartmouth this summer, and to supporting a smooth and successful transition over the coming months.

We’ll be sharing this wonderful news publicly later this afternoon. In the meantime, please join me in congratulating Dr. Hunt and offering her a warm Geisel welcome.

With thanks and best wishes,

Steve

Steven D.
