{"id":1019,"date":"2015-11-15T21:13:16","date_gmt":"2015-11-16T02:13:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/globalhealth\/?p=1019"},"modified":"2015-11-15T21:13:16","modified_gmt":"2015-11-16T02:13:16","slug":"health-through-the-lens-of-native-american-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/cghe\/2015\/11\/15\/health-through-the-lens-of-native-american-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Through the Lens of Native American Communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Give people cameras and they\u2019ll show you what they see.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the Little Earth of United Tribes urban Indian community in Minnesota and the Penobscot Nation in Maine were recently given the chance to do just that through a photovoice project organized by the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and funded by a grant from the Aetna Foundation. Participants photographed what they saw as challenges to healthy eating and an active lifestyle in their respective communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough our grantmaking across the country, we\u2019ve learned that the best solutions to health inequities will combine the insights of the communities themselves with proven, best-practice approaches,\u201d said Alyse Sabina, MPH, National Program Director.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re proud to be a part of this innovative step toward improving health in Native American communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Photovoice is an innovative method that empowers participants to frame potential solutions to social and environmental health challenges through photography and group discussion. With a generous grant from the Aetna Foundation, a team at Geisel\u2019s Center for Health Equity used photovoice to gain a better understanding of health within these two distinct Native American communities\u2014one urban and one rural\u2014directly from the people who live there.
