The goal of the Geisel School of Medicine's Admissions Committee is to enroll students who reflect all of those qualities and who will contribute to the uniquely close-knit and stimulating learning environment that defines Geisel. Dartmouth receives approximately 8,000 completed applications a year for 96 places in the entering class. Geisel's student body is national in scope and impact.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-784\" src=\"\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/gsmsign-adms.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"787\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Academic Requirements<\/h3>\n<p>The admissions committee carefully reviews the entire application with attention to personal, academic, scientific, and community engagement considerations. We seek to select a group of students each year who are reflective of our nation and who will contribute positively to, and benefit from, our institutional mission. Any completed physics coursework may be used to meet this requirement. One year (8 credit hours or equivalent) of biology coursework. Any completed biology coursework from general biology to advanced biology coursework may be used to meet this requirement One semester (4 credit hours or equivalent) of organic chemistry is required. For students on a quarter or trimester system, one quarter or trimester will meet the requirement if you have 16 credit hours (or equivalent) of chemistry coursework overall. One semester (4 credit hours or equivalent) of biochemistry is required. For students on a quarter or trimester system, one quarter or trimester will meet the requirement if you have 16 credit hours (or equivalent) of chemistry coursework overall One year (8 credit hours or equivalent) of chemistry coursework. You can use any chemistry course you have completed from general chemistry to advanced chemistry coursework. This is in addition to the required organic chemistry and biochemistry courses. One half-year (3 credit hours or equivalent) of college-level mathematics, including either calculus or statistics. The Admissions Committee considers each application holistically, however applicants should be aware that accepted applications have an average MCAT score of 516 and an average undergraduate GPA of 3.77. Students with MCAT scores of 502 or below will not be sent a secondary.<\/li>\n<li><b><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Geisel requires a minimum of three letters of recommendation and accepts no more than five<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0 If your school has a premedical committee, we require a composite recommendation from your school's premedical committee or a packet containing a\u00a0<b>minimum of three individual letters<\/b>\u00a0<b>but not more than five<\/b>. We encourage you to submit letters from a science faculty member and from someone who can speak to your clinical experience. Other letters may come from supervisors, employers, and other colleagues who know you well. If you are in graduate school, a letter from your thesis advisor is recommended as one of the\u00a0three required letters.<\/li>\n<li>For 2026 entry, the MCAT exam must have been taken between January 2023 and September 2025.<\/li>\n<li>Students matriculating at the Geisel School of Medicine must agree to meet the Technical Standards for Matriculation, Promotion and Graduation which can be reviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/admin\/learnserv\/esmpg\/\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/students.dartmouth.edu\/health-service\/medical-records\/incoming-student-requirements\/geisel-school-medicine-student-requirements\">immunization requirements<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>For more detailed information please see our <a href=\"https:\/\/geiselmed.dartmouth.edu\/admissions\/applying\/faq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frequently Asked Questions page<\/a><\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joint-degree programs at Dartmouth<br \/>\n<\/strong>In addition to the M.D. degree, Geisel medical students participate in the following degree programs:<\/p>\n<p><strong>MD-PhD Program<\/strong><br \/>\nThe MD-PhD program is committed to training physician-scientists for the 21st century who will provide excellent patient care, lead discovery in biomedical disease-oriented research, advocate for basic and translational biomedical research, and take leadership roles in biomedical research and the delivery of health care. It is designed to create leaders in health care and medical administration and in entrepreneurial ventures in the pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical-product industries. Students apply to the Tuck School during their second year of medical school. The MD-MBA program admits up to 6 students per year and is typically completed in either five or six years. These unique programs provide students with the academic knowledge and skill sets to make an impact in evidence-based public health practice and quality improvement. MD students from Geisel may apply to Thayer in the first, second, or third year of medical school and carry out their MEng studies in the fourth year of study, completing the MD program in their fifth year of matriculation at Geisel.
