A Legacy of Education and Innovation Since 1797<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Dartmouth Medical School, one of the oldest medical schools in the U.S., was founded in 1797<\/strong> by Dr. Nathan Smith. Over two centuries, the school has gained recognition for its excellence in medical education and leadership in healthcare. The medical school played a pioneering role in medical advances, including the introduction of stethoscopes in 1838, the first clinical x-ray in 1896, and contributions to the first COVID-19 vaccine in 2020.<\/p>\n

In 2012, the school was renamed as Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth <\/strong>to honor Audrey and Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss).<\/p>\n

The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth has a long-standing partnership with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC)<\/strong>, the primary teaching hospital for its students. Founded in 1893<\/strong>, DHMC is New Hampshire\u2019s only academic medical center. This close relationship allows students at Geisel to receive hands-on clinical training and engage in cutting-edge medical research. Together with the VA White River Junction Healthcare System, the school and the hospital form a hub of innovation, patient care, and medical education, preparing future healthcare leaders to solve the most pressing challenges in medicine.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Fostering Educational Excellence<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
In 2013<\/strong>, the Geisel Academy of Master Educators<\/strong> was established to recognize exceptional medical educators at the Geisel School of Medicine. Its mission was to reward excellence in medical education and provide mentorship by the most outstanding medical educators at Dartmouth.<\/p>\n

In 2024<\/strong>, the leadership of the Department of Medical Education and the Office of Educational Affairs re-envisioned Geisel\u2019s Academy to be more inclusive of educators across our programs, advancing the governance, scope, and mission of the Academy by launching the Geisel Academy of Educators and Scholars<\/b>. This new and inclusive model builds on the successes of GAME, establishing the school\u2019s commitment to fostering educational leadership and innovation in teaching within the medical school.<\/p>\n
