DMS Blitzmail Migration

DMS began its migration of 4,000 blitzmail accounts on the evening of August 1st, 2011. The process was finished in the summer of 2012.

Each person will receive a series of emails from DMS.email.migration@dartmouth.edu as their migration date approaches.

It is important that each person complete the steps on the Migration Prep page prior to migration, and follows the timelines on Migration Day page when it is time for their account to migrate. Skipping these steps can result in a failed migration of the account.

On the first day in new Blitz, everyone will be directed to http://bwa.dartmouth.edu, aka BWA (Blitz Web Access). BWA will run on windows computers, macs, and iPads.

Our first priority is to get every new Blitz user functional in the system as quickly as possible. Because 75 to 150 accounts will migrate on any given night, the only way to get everyone functional quickly is to have them use BWA. BWA requires no installation of software and works on Macs, Windows computers, iPads, and phone browsers. This priority includes helping users configure auto-forwarding settings in BWA if they wish to auto-forward their emails.

To help people become comfortable with BWA as quickly as possible, DMS Computing has developed two "BWA Survival Guides": a series of short videos and a set of written instructions. These guides provide instructions on how to perform the most commonly used functions in email. We encourage people to look at these ahead of time as a sneak preview.

Our second priority will be to assist users with the installation and configuration of email clients on their Dartmouth-owned desktops and laptops. If someone would like to use an email client (Outlook, Apple Mail, etc) right away, they may go ahead and try to configure the email client on their own by following our instructions for Macs or Windows computers. If there are problems with the configuration, we'll take their information, direct them to BWA,  and provide assistance as soon as we can after we've met our first priority.

Our third priority will be to assist users with setting up other devices: iPads, iPhones, Blackberries, and Droids. Users may go ahead and follow our instructions for setting up mobile devices, but if it does not work we'll ask them to wait for assistance until we have completed our first two priorities. If you have a critical need to have a phone configured immediately after migration, please email the Director of DMS Computing.

To access new Blitz from a home or personally owned computer, you may use BWA. Access to BWA is not blocked and can be accessed from any computer with a browser and an internet connection. While you are free to configure your home or personally owned computer by following our instructions, we need to inform everyone that we will not be providing support for configuring home or personally owned computers. We do not have the staffing resources and BWA provides good access to Blitz.

This is a large and exciting transformation. Blitzmail has given us 25 great years of service, and many of us will miss its simplicity and ease of use. But its feature set has fallen behind current standards and it is time to transition to our new system, Microsoft Office 365. Dartmouth's new system will provide a state-of-the-art platform, full of features and tools that will help DMS communicate and complete our work more efficiently and effectively.

We look forward to working with you in the months ahead and appreciate your patience during this important process.
