Information for Registrars : What's New?
CER Project
We would like to again thank all reporting facilities for helping NHSCR in our selection as a specialized registry in CDC's Enhancing Cancer Registries for Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) project. CER is a research approach to identify the best treatment protocols and strategies based on the recorded outcomes of patients, rather than by performing clinical trials.
As part of the new reporting requirements, every facility is required to collect some new data items. Some items (eg co-morbidities) will be required for ALL cases. Others are only required for breast, colorectal, and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cases diagnosed from January 1, 2011.
The additional new data items are specific to the CER project and have not been previously collected through NHSCR, CoC, NPCR, or SEER. They are not included in the standard NAACCR data dictionary or in FORDS. To assist registrars with data collection efforts, NHSCR is providing the following training material and references:
- CER overview
- Data Dictionary for Non-NAACCR Standard Data Items
- Table of Required Items
- Training Modules
- How to collect and code non-NAACCR Standard Data Items
- CER Standard Data Items
NHSCR will be applying for CE credits through NCRA. After viewing a training presentation, an evaluation form will be available. The NCRA-approval number will be provided to the viewer once the evaluation is received by NHSCR.
NHSCR will submit to CDC a pilot dataset in November 2012 and the final dataset in January 2013. We believe your participation in the CER-funded project as a Specialized Cancer Registry will not only enhance both New Hampshire and national cancer surveillance and prevention activities, but will also strengthen your own facility's data collection capabilities.
From spring 2011 onwards, we offer to visit New Hampshire reporting facilities to make a short presentation about the new activities, for example to your cancer committee/tumor board. If this may be of interest to your department, please email Maria Celaya at Maria.Celaya@dartmouth.edu or telephone 603-653-6621.
