Dartmouth Rises in U.S. News & World Report Rankings of Best Medical Schools

Hanover, N.H.—Dartmouth Medical School (DMS) continues to climb among the ranks of the nation's top medical schools, according to the latest survey by U.S. News & World Report magazine.

In the magazine's annual rankings of the nation's best graduate schools, DMS ranked 31st among medical schools for research, up from 32nd last year, and 38th for primary care. For the research ranking, DMS was tied with Boston University and the University of Alabama-Birmingham. DMS was tied with Tufts University in the primary care survey.

"We're pleased that Dartmouth Medical School continues to be recognized as one of the best in the nation," says Wiley "Chip" Souba, MD, ScD, MBA, Dean of DMS. "For over 200 years our faculty, researchers and students have been leaders of change and innovation, improving the lives of people around the world."

The rise in rankings is an early sign of success for DMS' 20x20 strategic plan to be in the top 20 medical schools by the end of the decade. The plan includes designing an innovative new medical school curriculum, growing DMS' research portfolio and capacity in translational medicine and developing a high-performing partnership with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center that fully integrates teaching and research to improve patient care.

To continue to grow basic science, clinical and translational research activity in order to produce discoveries that improve lives, DMS has successfully recruited nine top researchers to Dartmouth in recent months. Significantly, more than 80% of recent faculty additions to the faculty have brought National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding with them and many have added to their funding since arriving at DMS.

The new rankings will appear in the May 2012 issue of U.S News & World Report, which will be on newsstands April 3. For the complete list and methodology for the U.S. News & World Report's 2013 edition of Best Graduate Schools, please visit USNews.com.
