Green Appointed Chair of Microbiology and Immunology

Hanover, NH -- William R. Green, PhD, professor of microbiolgy, has been appointed chair of microbiology and immunology at Dartmouth Medical School, effective July 1, announced John C. Baldwin, MD, vice president for health affairs, Dartmouth College and dean, Dartmouth Medical School.

"He is a consistently funded investigator, an exemplary scholar and teacher and a fine institutional citizen. His scholarly work illustrates the future direction of Dartmouth Medical School, in terms of effective collaboration between our basic science and clinical programs at a level of national pre-eminence," said Baldwin.

Green succeeds Michael Fanger, PhD, professor of microbiology and immunology and of medicine, who is stepping down after 10 years. Baldwin commended Fanger's service as chair saying, "Under his leadership, microbiology and immunology has taken an important place on the national stage. His high academic standards, his institutional commitment and his unique good humor have endeared him to all of us."

Green's research focuses on immune mechanisms in mouse retroviruses that cause either leukemia/lymphoma or immunodeficiency. He also heads the new center for biomedical research excellence (COBRE) project funded by an $11.6 million award from the National Institutes of Health. The five-year grant supports collaborative projects at DMS in conjunction with the University of New Hampshire, promoting research opportunities for biomedical investigators in New Hampshire with broad potential for understanding and treating diseases of the immune system and cancer.

Green received his BS degree in Microbiology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1972, and his PhD in microbiology/immunology from Case Western Reserve University in 1977. After postdoctoral work as a fellow and as a research associate in immunology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, he moved to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington in Seattle, where he was appointed assistant professor.

Green joined the Dartmouth Medical School faculty in 1983. He is the director of the DMS Immunology Program, director of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center Research Program for Immunology and Cancer Immunotherapy, and has served as a member of various NIH Study Sections, including virology.
