Diabetes Foot Clinic

The Diabetes Foot Clinic project was a collaborative effort between Dr. Gregory Caputo and the C. Everett Koop Institute. The project's efforts were focused on the development of a World Wide Web-based resource for the prevention of lower extremity complications - such as amputation - in patients with diabetes.

A problem-based guide was developed for the WWW to help physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practicioners identify high-risk diabetic patients, outlining preventive and early management strategies. Each problem-oriented module - for example, a case study of a patient with certain foot complaints - can be accessed independently for easy use. The creation of each module involved transforming paper medical documents into an engaging, interactive format that could be accessed through the WWW. The Diabetes Foot Clinic website is currently hosted by Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Caputo was a visiting Fellow during a six-week period in July and August of 1996. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, and is also the Medical Director of the Diabetes Foot Clinic at the Hershey Medical Center. He is also affiliated with the Center for Locomotion Studies.
