Windsor Health Awareness Training in Schools
W.H.A.T.S. was a medical education program partially supported by the Koop Institute. Similar to Partners in Health Education (another Koop Institute program), W.H.A.T.S. worked with two Geisel School of Medicine faculty and four fourth-year medical students, teaching health prevention topics to seventh, eighth, and ninth grade classes in the local schools of Windsor, VT. The program was run by an experienced adolescent counselor.
Participating medical students co-taught with the counselor for nine-weeks, teaching three classes consecutively (one for each grade) one afternoon per week. The program was dedicated to providing the medical students with quality skills in teaching prevention strategies to adolescents. The medical students gained experience in both teaching prevention and implementing intervention strategies related to the prevention topics.
