Welcome to the Center for Genomic Medicine

Vision Statement

Genomic and other profiling technologies will lead to significant improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of most diseases. Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center will develop and implement new profiling technologies to improve health care.

Mission Statement

The Center for Genomic Medicine will provide a broad level of support for profiling patient samples, for the interpretation of findings, and for the design of studies related to personalized medicine.

About Us

Profiling patient samples
The center will serve as resource for identifying available tests at Dartmouth and elsewhere and facilitate access by researchers to samples, by working with existing biobanking activities. The center will also work with geneticists to identify and curate family information to allow improved management of high risk subjects and to permit the application of new screening and prevention procedures for very high risk individuals.

Interpretation of Findings
The Center will develop and implement novel procedures for annotation from genomic and next generation profiling procedures. This function includes the development of new analytical approaches for next generation data as well as evaluation and implementation of existing software. Evaluation and implementation functions will be coordinated with the Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research and the Bioinformatics Shared Resource.
The Center will also secure access to publically available but highly restricted information from the The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Internation Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC). These data provide opportunities for initial querying and pilot evaluation of findings from a diverse set of samples that have been extensively studied. Retrieving data from the ICGA and TCGC requires the development of protocols, management and integration of diverse datasets and high dimensional analysis. The Center will provide tools to enable researchers at Dartmouth study these data. In addition, the Center will provide support for retrieving data from other high-dimensional environments such as from dbGAP.

Design of Studies
The Center will assist investigators to develop studies relevant to personalized medicine activities. Study design functions will include the design of clinical trials allowing for individual disease characteristics such as according to tumor mutations or pharmacogenetic profiles. The Center will also provide assistance in the design of population based studies that seek to identify individual causes for disease. The Center will also provide assistance with protocol development
