A Cure for the Uncommon Cold? "Addressing Disparities in Primary Care"

Since 2006, the DMS Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee has worked to highlight the issues championed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and demonstrate how his ideals relate to the field of medicine and why they need to be addressed by the medical community. Here is a list of events planned for the 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

MOVIE:
Diabetes afflicts minority communities disproportionately and we look to explore the role of primary care providers in addressing this health inequity. Dr. Richard Comi will introduce the movie.

Title: Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days

Description: This movie chronicles six Americans with diabetes who switch to a raw foods diet in order to reverse diabetes naturally.

SPEAKER:
Dr. Jennifer Madden

Title: "Gender Variance for the Primary Care Physician"

Description: Dr. Madden is a primary care physician who has a special interest in working with transgendered individuals.

KEYNOTE:
Drs. Irene Dankwa Mullan and Fitzhugh Mullan

Title: "Social Accountability and Health Care Equity"

Description: The Mullans will speak individually on "The Social Determinants of Health and Health Equity" and "Social Accountability and Medical Education."

INTERACTIVE SESSION:
Lawrence Family Health Center Team: Dr Valdini and Colleagues

Title: "Helping the Dream Come True: Freedom, Poverty and Health"

Description: The team will address the social and economic inequalities that lead to health disparities and contribute to a lack of freedom for persons in poverty.
