Robert L. Thurer, MD (DC '67, DMS '68)
Robert Thurer is Medical Director for Blood Management Solutions at the Haemonetics Corporation in Braintree, Massachusetts. Previously he was chief academic officer for Harvard Medical School's facility based in Dubai known as the Harvard Medical School Dubai Center Institute for Postgraduate Education and Research. He has been an active member of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a successful cardiothoracic surgeon and clinical educator at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for 25 years. A graduate of Dartmouth College ('67) and DMS ('68), he received his MD from Harvard Medical School, and completed his general and thoracic surgical training at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Thurer is a recognized expert in the fields of surgery of the lung and thorax as well as blood use in surgery, and he has published extensively on many topics including blood conservation and lung cancer. Dr. Thurer served as Chair of the Transfusion Alternatives Committee of the AABB and the Transfusion Alliance. He was a founding board member of the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management and was also representative of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery to the AABB. He is a reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and other leading publications.
