A higher power view of the papillary portion of the renal pyramid shows the numerous large collecting ducts (of Bellini) which ultimately open up onto the surface of the papilla (the area cribrosa) and express the urine into the space of the minor calyx. Remnants of the poorly-preserved transitional epithelium lining the calyx and its smooth muscle wall may be seen.
