The M.D.-M.B.A. Program
The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth offer students an opportunity to pursue combined M.D.-M.B.A. degrees that can be completed in either five or six years. In a time of tremendous change in health care, there is a growing need for leaders with expertise in both medicine and management. The Geisel-Tuck dual degree program is designed to open pathways for leadership roles in diverse areas and industries such as: pharmaceuticals, biotech, health care related entrepreneurial ventures, governmental health programs, health related non-profits, hospital management, HMO management, large practice management, health care policy formation, and medical school administration, just to name a few.
The Tuck School of Business is the first graduate school of business and is one of the top management schools in the world. The principal goal of Tuck's M.B.A. program is to produce graduates who have outstanding leadership and management skills. The school's general management curriculum provides a solid foundation in business fundamentals including financial analysis, marketing, operations, and strategy. The fully elective second year allows students to focus on specific areas of interest.
Additionally, several members of the Tuck and Geisel faculties have experience as consultants to health-related organizations and many Tuck courses examine case studies drawn from the health care system.
There is no formula for admission to the combined program. Decisions are based on a combination of following factors: academic excellence; leadership ability; accomplishments; interpersonal skills and diversity. Although almost all Tuck students have work experience before they enroll, this is not a prerequisite for admission to the dual degree program.
Candidates for the M.D.-M.B.A. Program must complete the separate admission and financial aid application processes at both Geisel and Tuck. Partial funding is available from the Hampers Endowment for selected M.D.-M.B.A. students.
- Applicants are encouraged to apply for the combined degree program after admission and matriculation to Geisel.
- Applicants applying for the MD/MBA program prior to matriculating at the Geisel School should initiate an application to each school where independent admissions decisions will be made, but coordinated by a joint MD/MBA subcommittee. Applicants are advised to apply early during the applicant cycle so that the timing of decisions can be coordinated by both schools.
