A. Introduction of Membership
Dave Nierenberg asked all members present to introduce themselves for the benefit of the two new student representatives.
B. Report on the new ICE course:
Eric Shirley reported the following regarding the first and second sessions of the new ICE course:
I. The first session was held in August and was well received by students. It included:
- a. Evidence based medicine lectures;
- b. A day-long session on substance abuse;
- c. A new session on the roles of different members of the healthy care team; and
- d. An introduction to radiology.
II. The ICE course that began on Oct. 15 includes:
- a. The first round of OSCEs;
- b. More evidence based medicine Š lecture and student presentations;
- c. More radiology sessions; and
- d. A new session on arterial blood gas procedure training incorporating the use of mannequins.
C. A quick summary of the results of the MBME Steps I & II:
I. Dave Nierenberg presented a report by the MBME of DMS students scores on Steps I & II and an explanation of the new method for reporting:
- a. On average, DMS studentÕs scores were approximately .17 SD above the national mean;
- b. On average, DMS student scored significantly higher in Ob/Gyn and Psych than the national mean in those areas.
- c. On the whole, it was a very good year for DMS seniors and DMS curriculum.
D. Developing a Ņcompetency-based curriculumÓ (continued):
I. Dave Nierenberg reported that he is beginning the process of gathering information regarding how DMS clerkship directors are already fulfilling the requirements of the ACGME and the ABMS:
- a. Dave has developed a form (presented as an overhead and included herein as Attachment A) that lists the six required core competencies in a column, with a corresponding column for CS directors to state ways in which the competencies are addressed and evaluated in their clerkships;
- b. Discussion regarding the form resulted in an additional column added to the form for listing assessments (Attachment B and Attachment C).
